Many people assume that household cleaners or bleach are safe for all types of floors. But when it comes to cleaning wooden floors, using the wrong product can cause lasting damage. Wooden floors need gentle care to stay looking their best.

In this guide, we explain why harsh cleaning products should be avoided and what to use instead.

The Truth About Household Floor Cleaners

Most general floor cleaners are made for tiles or vinyl. These surfaces can handle strong chemicals. Wood cannot. Wooden floors are protected by a finish that seals the surface. This finish can be damaged by everyday cleaners.

Once the finish is worn away, the wood underneath becomes exposed. Dirt, moisture, and stains can then soak into the floor and cause damage.

Why Bleach Is a Big No

Bleach is one of the harshest cleaners available. It is great for disinfecting, but it is not safe for wood. Here’s why:

It can strip the colour from the wood

It may cause patchy, uneven areas

It reacts badly with many wood finishes

Even when diluted, bleach can harm your floor. The damage is often permanent.

Water and Wood Don’t Mix

Wood is a natural material. It soaks up water easily. When you use too much water or very wet mops, the moisture can seep into the wood. This leads to problems such as:

Warping or swelling

Buckling or cupping

Water stains

Cleaning wooden floors with steam mops or wet mops is also risky. Heat and moisture can cause the wood to expand or crack over time.

Residue Makes Things Worse

Some household cleaners leave a film on the floor. This sticky residue attracts dust and dirt. Over time, your floor may start to look dull—even after cleaning.

Residue can also make wooden floors feel slippery or tacky. This is not only unpleasant but can also be unsafe.

The Right Way to Clean Wooden Floors

To keep your wooden floors in great condition, follow these simple tips:

Use a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner

Wipe floors with a damp (not wet) microfibre mop

Clean up spills straight away with a soft cloth

Vacuum regularly using a soft-bristle brush or hardwood floor attachment

Avoid vinegar, ammonia, bleach, or anything that needs rinsing

These steps will help protect your floors and keep them looking fresh.

Today, floor sanding is fast, clean, and efficient. But go back 100 years, and the process was completely different. In the early 20th century—especially around the 1920s—refinishing wooden floors was slow, messy, and highly skilled work.

In this article, we’ll take a look at how floor sanding and refinishing wooden floors were done in the past. We’ll also compare it to the modern methods used across the UK today.

‘Les raboteurs de parquet’ (English title: ‘The Floor Scrapers’) is an oil painting from 1875 by French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte.

Manual Floor Sanding: Hard Work on Hands and Knees

Before electric sanding machines became common, everything was done by hand. Craftsmen would kneel on the floor and use scrapers, sandpaper, or abrasive blocks. These tools helped them remove the top layer of wood and smooth out any imperfections.

By the 1920s, early mechanical sanders started to appear. These machines were large, heavy, and hard to control. They didn’t collect dust either, so the air would quickly fill with fine particles. Cleaning up took just as long as the sanding itself.

Sanding Edges by Hand

The first floor sanders couldn’t reach corners or skirting boards. This meant the edges of every room had to be sanded by hand. Craftsmen used small scrapers or sanding blocks to get a smooth, even finish around the edges. It took time and care to blend these areas with the rest of the floor.

How People Refinished Wooden Floors

Once the floor was sanded, it was time to apply the finish. The most common products were oil-based varnishes and shellac. Shellac dried quickly and gave floors a warm, amber colour.

Finishes were applied by hand using brushes or cloths. Several thin coats were needed, and each layer had to dry fully before the next one was added. Unlike today, there were no quick-drying or water-based options. It was a slow process that required patience.

Buffing and Long-Term Care

After finishing, the floor was usually buffed by hand. People used rags, cloths, or even sacks to bring out the shine. Buffing machines weren’t widely available, so getting that polished look took a lot of effort.

To maintain the shine, homeowners used paste wax. This was applied by hand and then buffed regularly. It helped protect the floor but also meant ongoing upkeep was essential.

How Floor Sanding Has Changed

Modern floor sanding has come a long way. Today, machines are lighter, easier to use, and come with dust extraction systems. Professionals can sand a floor quickly with minimal mess.

Edge sanders now make it simple to get a clean, even finish around skirting boards. And when it comes to refinishing wooden floors, there are many durable, fast-drying options to choose from.

Even though technology has improved, the goal remains the same: to bring out the natural beauty of wood flooring.

When installing engineered wood flooring, most people focus on the boards themselves—but the wooden floor underlay you choose can quietly play a big role in your home’s comfort and even your energy bills.

That’s right: selecting the right underlay isn’t just about cushioning or soundproofing. It could also mean real savings on heating and cooling over time.

Why Wooden Floor Underlay Matters

A wooden floor underlay acts as a barrier between your subfloor and your engineered wood boards. While its primary jobs include absorbing sound, smoothing out minor imperfections, and adding comfort underfoot, certain underlays also provide thermal insulation.

In homes where energy efficiency is a priority, choosing a high-quality wooden floor underlay can help keep warm air in during winter—and block heat during summer.

Here’s how common types of wooden floor underlay compare:

Standard foam underlay: Offers basic cushioning, but low in insulation.

Rubber or cork underlay: More durable with moderate thermal resistance.

Foil-backed or thermal underlay: Designed specifically for insulation, ideal for colder climates or installations over unheated spaces.

Wooden Floor Underlay and Underfloor Heating

If your engineered wooden floors are installed over underfloor heating, your underlay choice is especially important. In this case, you need an underlay with low thermal resistance so the heat can pass through efficiently. Using a highly insulating underlay in this scenario could reduce the effectiveness of your heating system and increase energy use.

Be sure to choose an underlay suitable for underfloor heating—these are specially engineered to strike the right balance between comfort and heat transfer.

Choosing the Best Wooden Floor Underlay for Your Home

Whether you’re installing flooring in a Victorian house, cozy cottage or a modern apartment, your choice of wooden floor underlay should reflect your climate, subfloor, and heating system.

Your wooden floor underlay does more than support your floorboards—it supports your home’s energy efficiency too. With the right underlay, you’ll not only enjoy quieter, more comfortable floors, but also potentially lower energy bills. Need advice? Give us a call!

Wondering if installing wooden floors can increase your home’s value? According to a recent study by the National Wood Flooring Association, 80% of estate agents agree that wooden flooring can boost a property’s market value by anywhere from 1% to 10%.

That means for a home valued at £250,000, fitting wooden floors could potentially add up to £25,000 to its worth.

Why Wooden Floors Are a Smart Investment

Wooden floors are one of the most popular flooring choices in the UK—and for good reason. They’re available in a wide range of colours, grains, and styles, making them versatile for any interior design. But beyond aesthetics, they also offer real financial benefits.

If you’re looking to upgrade your home and increase its appeal to potential buyers, investing in wooden flooring is a smart move. Estate agents consistently rate them as a top feature that adds both style and resale value.

How to Maintain Wooden Floors Without Causing Damage

To protect the value and appearance of your wooden floors, regular care is essential. Building expert Ray White of Ray White Builders has shared his professional guide for keeping your hardwood flooring in top shape—without scratching or dulling the finish.

1. Gather the Right Cleaning Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have the right equipment. For wooden floors, you’ll need:

A soft-bristled broom

A vacuum with a hardwood floor setting

A microfibre mop

A pH-neutral wood floor cleaner

Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive tools that can wear down or scratch the surface.

2. Sweep and Vacuum Regularly

Loose dirt and debris can be highly abrasive on wooden floors. Start by sweeping with a soft broom to clear away grit. Then vacuum using a setting specifically for hardwood to remove finer particles. Always check the vacuum’s wheels and beater bar to ensure they’re clean and won’t scratch the floor.

3. Mop With Minimal Moisture

When mopping wooden floors, less is more. Use a lightly dampened microfibre mop and follow the grain of the wood. Mix a small amount of pH-neutral cleaner with water according to the product’s directions. Avoid excess water or steam mops, as moisture can seep into the wood and cause warping or discolouration over time.

4. Deal With Spills Immediately

Spills on wooden floors should be cleaned up right away. Use a dry cloth for most spills, and for stickier substances, gently rub the area with a slightly damp cloth. Acting fast prevents moisture from penetrating the surface and damaging the wood underneath.

Which One Is Right For You?

When it comes to selecting the right type of wood flooring, many homeowners find themselves choosing between two popular installation methods: the floating floor and the glued down floor. Both have their own distinct advantages and potential drawbacks, so the best choice ultimately depends on your space, budget, and lifestyle.

In this guide, we’ll outline the key differences between floating floors and glued down floors to help you make an informed decision that suits your needs.

What Is a Floating Floor?

A floating floor is a type of installation where the floorboards aren’t secured to the subfloor with nails or adhesive. Instead, the planks ‘float’ over the existing surface, interlocking using a tongue-and-groove or click-lock mechanism.

Advantages of a Floating Floor

1. Simple DIY Installation
One of the main attractions of a floating floor is how straightforward it is to lay. There’s no need for glue or nails, so even beginners can install it using the interlocking system. This makes it a time-saving and budget-friendly option.

2. Affordable and Low Maintenance
Floating floors don’t require special tools, glue, or nails, which helps reduce both material and labour costs. They’re also easy to clean and maintain, making them ideal for busy households.

3. Health-Conscious and Non-Toxic
As floating floors don’t use adhesives, you avoid exposure to harsh chemicals like formaldehyde and phthalates—both of which are commonly found in certain glues and may pose health risks.

4. Comfortable Underfoot
The layer of air between the subfloor and the floorboards creates a slight cushion, offering a softer feel when walking or standing.

Disadvantages of a Floating Floor

1. Unsuitable for Humid Environments
In areas with high humidity, floating floors can expand or contract, leading to warping or buckling. Using the correct underlay can help minimise this issue.

2. Can Be Noisy
A common drawback is the sound—floating floors can creak or echo, particularly in larger spaces or where acoustic insulation is limited.

3. May Wear Over Time
Floating floors can develop dents or signs of wear under heavy furniture or in high-traffic areas. The upside is that damaged planks can often be replaced with relative ease.

What Is a Glued Down Floor?

A glued down floor involves applying a strong adhesive directly to the subfloor, then laying the floorboards on top. This creates a more permanent and stable flooring system, often used with solid wood, engineered wood, or luxury vinyl planks.

Advantages of a Glued Down Floor

1. Solid and Secure
Since each board is firmly bonded to the subfloor, a glued down floor doesn’t shift or move. It offers a more solid, stable feel underfoot—something many homeowners prefer.

2. Quieter Performance
Because it’s fixed in place, this type of flooring tends to be quieter than a floating floor, making it ideal for bedrooms, nurseries, and home offices.

3. No Additional Underlay Required
The adhesive often serves as a built-in moisture barrier, which can eliminate the need to purchase and install a separate underlay.

Disadvantages of a Glued Down Floor

1. More Complex to Install
Laying a glued down floor typically requires more time and skill—often best handled by professionals. The process can also be messy, with strong adhesives that require adequate ventilation.

2. Costly Repairs
Since the floorboards are permanently attached, replacing damaged sections can be labour-intensive and expensive. A specialist may be required for repairs or replacements.

Floating Floor vs Glued Down Floor: Key Differences

Feature

Floating Floor

Glued Down Floor

Installation

DIY-friendly, no glue required

Professional recommended, adhesive needed

Comfort

Softer underfoot

Firmer and more stable

Noise

Can be noisier

Quieter underfoot

Moisture Resistance

Requires underlay

Adhesive acts as vapour barrier

Maintenance

Easy to replace individual planks

More difficult to repair

Cost

More budget-friendly

Typically higher due to materials and labour

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a floating floor better than a glued down floor?
It depends on your preferences. A floating floor is perfect for quick DIY projects and areas where flexibility is a priority. A glued down floor, on the other hand, offers more stability and quieter performance, though it involves more effort and cost to install.

Do floating floors feel hollow?
Some floating floors can feel slightly hollow or bouncy if not properly installed with a quality underlay. However, premium materials and correct fitting can greatly reduce this effect.

Can you install a floating floor over existing flooring?
Yes, a floating floor can often be laid directly over existing hard flooring like tiles or vinyl—as long as the surface is clean, level, and in good condition.

How long do glued down floors last?
With proper care and maintenance, glued down floors can last for decades. Their fixed nature makes them highly durable, especially in high-traffic areas.

Final Thoughts

Choosing between a floating floor and a glued down floor comes down to your priorities—whether it’s ease of installation, comfort, durability, or long-term maintenance.

Opt for a floating floor if you’re looking for an affordable, easy-to-install solution that can be replaced or updated with minimal effort.

Choose a glued down floor if you prefer a more stable, permanent flooring with less noise and are happy to invest in professional installation.

Whichever option you go for, both can dramatically improve the look and feel of your home—just make sure the choice complements your lifestyle, budget, and environment.

Wood floors are beautiful, but they don’t always handle summer weather well. Changes in humidity and temperature can make them expand, contract, or even warp if you’re not careful. Here’s what happens to wooden floors in summer and how to keep them in great shape.

How Wood Floors React to Summer Weather

1. Humidity Makes Wood Expand

Warm, humid air causes wood to absorb moisture and swell. This can lead to:

    • Cupping – Edges of planks rising higher than the centre.

    • Buckling – Boards lifting off the subfloor in extreme cases.

2. Dry Air Causes Shrinking

If you crank up the air conditioning, the dry air can make wood floors shrink, leading to:

    • Gaps – Small spaces forming between planks.

    • Cracking – In severe cases, the wood may split.

3. Sunlight Can Fade the Colour

Direct sunlight can cause fading or darkening, depending on the type of wood. Over time, UV rays break down the finish and change the wood’s natural tone.

Wooden floors can be protected from damaging UV rays with a range of oils and lacquers with built in UV protection.

How to Protect Your Floors

    • Control humidity – Keep indoor humidity between 35% and 55% using a humidifier or dehumidifier.

    • Avoid extreme temperatures – an ambient temperature of about 20-22 degrees celsius is ideal.

    • Use curtains or UV window filters – Reduce direct sunlight to prevent fading.

    • Clean carefully – Use a dry mop or a slightly damp cloth; avoid excess water.

    • Allow for natural movement – Leave small expansion gaps when installing new floors to prevent damage.

    • Use finishing products with UV protection – when the time comes to have your floors renewed with a sand and refinish, ensure an oil or lacquer with built-in UV protection is used.

Final Thoughts

Wood floors react to summer’s heat and humidity, but with a little care, you can prevent major issues. Keep the air balanced, protect from direct sunlight, and clean gently to keep your floors looking great year-round.

If your hardwood floors are looking scratched, dull, or damaged, you might be debating whether to refinish hardwood floors or completely replace them. Both options can improve your home, but which is the right choice? Let’s compare the pros, cons, and costs to help you decide.

Sanding and Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Sanding removes the top layer of the floor to erase surface damage, then applies a fresh stain and sealant.

Benefits of Refinishing Hardwood Floors:
• Cost-Effective: Refinishing is more affordable than installing new hardwood flooring.
• Restores Natural Beauty: Your floors will look like new while keeping their original charm.
• Eco-Friendly Option: Refinishing reuses your existing flooring, reducing waste.
• Customizable Appearance: Choose from a variety of wood floor stain colors to match your home’s style.

Drawbacks of Refinishing:
• Time-Consuming Process: It can take days to complete, including drying time.
• Dust and Cleanup: Even with modern tools, sanding can create dust.
• Limits of Refinishing: Only solid hardwood and certain types of engineered wood flooring can be sanded, depending on thickness.

Replacing Your Wood Flooring
Replacing floors involves removing old flooring and installing something entirely new, whether it’s engineered hardwood, laminate flooring, or even luxury vinyl plank.

Benefits of Replacing Floors:
• Brand-New Look: Perfect for heavily damaged or warped floors.
• More Design Choices: Upgrade to modern styles, textures, or materials like wide-plank or distressed wood flooring.
• Fix Underlying Issues: Replacing allows you to address problems like squeaky floors or water damage.

Drawbacks of Replacing Floors:
• Higher Costs: Replacing hardwood flooring is more expensive than refinishing.
• More Disruption: It takes longer and creates more mess in your home.
• Less Sustainable: Removing old floors adds to landfill waste, although some materials can be recycled.

Cost Comparison of Refinishing vs. Replacing
• Refinishing Costs: Typically £35–£55 per square meter, depending on the finish and condition of your floors.
• Replacement Costs: Starting at around £20 per square meter for materials like laminate or around £60 for engineered wood and increasing for premium options like solid hardwood.

How to Choose the Best Option for Your Floors
• Refinish Hardwood Floors: Best for solid or engineered hardwood in decent shape, with only surface-level damage.
• Replace Floors: Ideal if the flooring is warped, has water damage, or you want a completely new look with modern materials.

Conclusion: Upgrade Your Wood Floors the Right Way
If your existing floors are still in good condition, sanding and refinishing hardwood floors is a cost-effective, eco-friendly way to restore their beauty. However, if your floors are beyond repair or you want a new design, replacing them with high-quality materials like engineered wood flooring or luxury vinyl plank flooring might be the better choice.

Whichever route you choose, both options can enhance your home’s value and transform its appearance.

Want to find out more, or arrange a free site survey to better evaluate your floor options? Contact us.

Laminate flooring is a popular, affordable option for homeowners, but it comes with both benefits and drawbacks. Here’s what you need to know.

Pros of Laminated Flooring

• Affordable: Cheaper than hardwood or tile but still stylish.
• Durable: Scratch, stain, and fade-resistant—great for homes with kids or pets.
• Easy to Install: Simple click-and-lock system, often DIY-friendly.
• Versatile Styles: Mimics wood, stone, or tile in various colors and patterns.
• Low Maintenance: Easy to clean with just a sweep or mop.
• Some Moisture Resistance: Modern options handle spills better than older ones.

Cons of Laminated Flooring

• Shorter Lifespan: Doesn’t last as long as hardwood and can’t be refinished.
• Feels Less Natural: Doesn’t have the texture or warmth of real wood or stone.
• Water Sensitivity: Standard laminate can warp if exposed to moisture.
• Noise Issues: Can sound hollow without proper underlayment.
• Not Eco-Friendly: Made from synthetic materials, though greener options exist.

Ultimately

When choosing flooring, style and comfort are important—but so is your health and the environment. Carpets, especially synthetic ones, shed microplastics, tiny plastic particles that harm both people and nature. Wood floors are a cleaner, smarter alternative.

How Carpets Release Microplastics

• Everyday Use: Walking, vacuuming, and cleaning cause synthetic carpet fibres to break down, releasing microplastics into the air and dust.

• Invisible Problem: These particles are so small you can’t see them, but they’re everywhere, including the air you breathe.

• Water Pollution: Washing carpets can send microplastics into waterways, harming marine life.

Why Microplastics Are Harmful

• Health Risks: Microplastics in indoor air and dust can be inhaled, and kids and pets are especially at risk.

• Environmental Damage: These particles pollute ecosystems and don’t break down, making them a long-term problem.

Why Wood Floors Are Better

• No Microplastics: Wood floors don’t shed harmful particles.

• Easy to Clean: Dust and dirt are easy to sweep or mop up.

• Durable and Eco-Friendly: Properly maintained wood floors last for decades and are renewable when sourced responsibly.

• Timeless Style: Wood floors add value and elegance to any home.

Bottom line

While carpets may seem cozy, their hidden environmental and health impacts make wood floors the better choice. Wooden floors are stylish, sustainable, keep your home cleaner and are better for your health – no microplastics included.

Have questions?
